Death sentence for SP, two cops - CPI(Maoist)

Peeved over killing, arrest and surrender of their members in Rayagada district, the outlawed CPI (Maoist) has pronounced death sentence for the Superintendent of Police (SP) and two other policemen engaged in anti-naxal operations, official sources said on Monday.

A seven-page letter signed by one Azad, self-styled secretary of Bansadhara Divisional Committee (BDC), sent to the local Press Club last night, accused district SP Asish Kumar Singh of launching a campaign against Maoists by staging fake surrenders.

Confirming receipt of the letter from the Maoists, DIG, south-western range, Sanjeev Panda said that the ultras resorted to the move as they are frustrated.

The letter is an indication of their organization weakening in the area, the DIG said over phone claiming that at least seven Maoist cadres surrendered and 30 of them were arrested by the police in Rayagada during last three months.

This apart, the killing of three women armed cadre in an encounter with security personnel last week in Rayagada had also come as a blow to the outfit, a senior police official said.

The SP is held responsible for making false claim that some Maoists surrendered before police, the letter said, adding that innocent people were being harassed by police on the pretext of their alleged link with red rebels.
