CM Patnaik requested Union minister for Commerce and Industry for setting up of an National Institute of design at BBSR.
Offering land and other infrastructure support from the state government, the chief minister emphasized that an institute focusing on handloom and handicrafts could ideally be located in Orissa as it could serve tribal regions of not only Orissa but also Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh and the entire eastern region. Sharma, according to a press release issued by the chief minister's office, has agreed to consider the proposal.
Earlier, the Union government, going by the National Design Policy, had proposed to establish four new design institutes on the pattern of NID, Ahmedabad, during the 11th five-year plan. Three locations have already identified to cover central, southern and north-eastern regions of the country, officials said.
Naveen requested the Union minister to include Orissa in the e-biz programme, under which five states have already been identified. Sharma reportedly agreed to include Orissa in the e-biz programme in the coming year to facilitate industrial promotion and project monitoring, the release said.
The CM also asked Sharma to acquiesce a proposal to organize International Trade Fair for Orissa handicrafts annually for three years at an estimated cost of Rs 3.30 crore under the Market Access Initiative of the department of commerce. Sharma, according to the release, consented to the state government's proposal to hold the trade fair in Orissa in January, 2010.
Sharma also accepted the state's demand for providing infrastructure support for development of industrial clusters under the Industrial Infrastructure Upgradation Scheme (IIUS) of the central government for clusters located at Balasore (plastic products), at a project cost of Rs 62.50 crore, and another at Mancheswar (engineering) at a project cost of Rs 61 crore, the release said, adding the Union minister for smooth implementation of the metallurgical cluster project at Kalinga Nagar in Jajpur.
