The newly-elected BJD legislators met here this evening and formally elected Patnaik as the BJDLP leader, party sources said.

BJD swept the assembly polls, held simultaneously with the Lok Sabha elections by winning 103 of the 147 assembly seats.

Patnaik is scheduled to meet Governor M C Bhandare shortly in order to stake claim for government formation.

Raj Bhavan sources said Bhandare has already accepted the recommendation of the council of ministers to dissolve the 13th assembly, the tenure of which expires on June 30.
