At least one person has died due to the severe heat wave sweeping across Orissa, where the mercury has crossed 40 degrees Celsius, an official said Monday. Local newspapers had reported that at least 23 people died in the past month due to the heat wave. However district administers figured as 5 only and only one was due to sunstroke.The person who died of sunstroke April 1 has been identified as Baisnaba Charan Das, 56, a resident of Jagatsinghpur district.
According to the meteorological office here, a heat wave is prevailing in several areas of the Orissa."Many places recorded a maximum temperature of over 40 degrees Sunday," said meteorological officer K. Subudhi.
While Angul town recorded the highest temperature of 44.3 degrees Celsius, Titilagarh reported 43.5 degrees Sunday. Talcher town in Angul district had recorded 44.3 degrees Saturday.
Other places that recorded maximum temperatures of over 40 degrees Sunday were Bhabanipatna at 42.7, Chandbali at 42.0, Balasore at 41.5, Keonjhar at 40.0, Jharsuguda at 42.4, Sambalpur at 43.5, Bolangir at 43.3, Malkangiri at 41.6, Sundergarh at 43.0 and Phulbani at 41.0 degrees Celsius.
